What Your Teeth Can Tell You About Your Health

Health is wealth.

What many people do not realize is that your oral health can speak volumes about your overall health. Prevention is a much better practice than treatment and we all know that we should get physical examinations at least once a year. When it comes to teeth, many people avoid the dentist, but everyone should be visiting the dental office twice a year for oral health examinations, teeth x-rays, and teeth cleanings. While a dental exam is mostly focused on what’s going in the mouth, it can also be effective in spotting signs of health issues.

Here’s what common oral issues can tell you about your health:

Teeth Grinding – Stress

Teeth grinding often occurs for many people when they sleep but it can also be a sign of excessive stress or anxiety issues. Stress is mentally incapacitating but teeth grinding is one of the ways in which stress can manifest itself physically. Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can ultimately lead to severe oral cavity issues as well.

Warts and Swelling – HIV

Warts, swelling of salivary glands, and white or dark colored spots in the mouth may indicate (but not guarantee) an HIV infection.

Receding Gums – Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is characterized by a loss of bone density and a receding gum line can be directly tied to it. Once bone starts to decay in the jaw bone, tooth support is compromised and the gums begin to recede.

Signs of Diabetes

There is no oral health issue that can solely point to diabetes but chronic dry mouth, bleeding or receding gums, and loose teeth have all been tied to diabetic issues.
